Weekly Set - WAT TO KNOW.
Summertime is officially in full effect. With the temperature steadily rising within the Northern Hemisphere, recording artists took notice and delivered some sun-drenched tunes for your audio pleasure. Need proof? Just check this week's Weekly Set. The Cool Kids swimsuit up along with soulful crooner Mayer Hawthorne, and so do Common and No I.D. who avoid going crazy off the heat. Internet sensation Kreayshawn has some friendly words for female gold diggers whereas Mac Miller and Talib Kweli bethink themselves to their core values. In addition, a previously unreleased track hints at the fact that Cudder has been fighting bipolarity for a while.
Furthermore, Washed Out offered a new tune, The Weeknd took on Drizzy's "Trust Issues," Smoke DZA and Domo Genesis joined forces, Tate La Rock and Troublemaker remixed The Weeknd's "Rolling Stone," and Gold Panda treated his followers with an all-new tune.
Notable music videos during the past seven days include Theophilus's "Last Name London," Pac Div's song, Skrillex's "Rock N Roll," Estelle and Rick Ross breaking hearts, Curren$y's "She Don't Want a Man," Young the Giant's "Cough Syrup," Rozay and Weezy's "9 Piece," The Kills' "The Future Starts Slow," SBTRKT's outstanding collaboration with Little Dragon entitled "Wildfire," and last but not least Eminem and Sasha Grey being "Space Bound."
Metronomy announce North American tour this fall
The 4-piece electro-pop outfit, Metronomy, is bringing their summer-inspired flavor of the UK to North America this fall. Following the July 26 U.S. release date of The English Riviera, the band will perform two shows in late July in New York and Los Angeles before embarking on a full North American tour starting in early October. The band's combination of electro-pop harmonies, high-pitched vocals and twisting rhythm sections will create the feeling of a '70s summer late into the month of October.
Metronomy's third proper full-length album, The English Riviera, drops July 26 here in the U.S. on Because Music/Big Beat/Atlantic.

Kid Cudi talks acting role on ‘How to Make It in America’
During a recent interview with MTV, KiD CuDi revealed that he intends to return as Domingo Brown on the second season of the HBO original series, How to Make It in America. Although he was fairly satisfied with his acting performance, Cudder now aims to raise up the bar a little.
“This season, my character has a lot more depth than the first season, and one of the things that I really took seriously was preparing. I got an acting coach; I wanted to step it up. With anything that I’m doing, I always want to take it to the next level — whether it’s music or acting.”
Shia LaBeouf talks “Marijuana” video
It appears that directing videos is the new rapping these days. A few weeks ago, we saw KiD CuDi's Amsterdam-inspired video for "Marijuana." As previously reported, the clip was directed by Shia LaBeouf. MTV sat down with the multi-talented artist and talked about the making of the story for the visual.
“[Cage] is one of my good friends. Cage, Chris Palko, and I had been trying to make a movie about him for a while,” LaBeouf explained. “Cudi hit [Cage] up and did a song with him. Cage sent me the song, called ‘Maniac,’ so initially, we started prepping this video, which is really like a short horror movie that I made that comes out on Halloween,” he said. “In the interim, while we were finishing up the effects on it, [Cudi] told me he was going to Amsterdam for the Cannabis Cup…And to do that with Cudi when he’s a judge, and I get to roll with him with my 8mm camera [like] an ‘Easy Rider’ documentarian, I felt like Cameron Crowe or something"
Hodgy Beats talks MellowHype, Earl Sweatshirt and more
The good folks over at Pitchfork sat down with Odd Future/MellowHype member Hodgy Beats to discuss a range of subjects like Odd Future's upcoming collaboration with Nas, the whereabouts of Earl Sweatshirt, among others. The young artist gave an update on the status of the forthcoming followup to MellowHype's 2010 album BlackenedWhite.
"We've been cutting a bunch of songs, and every song sounds so different. On some of the songs, there's really no structure -- or there is a structure, but it's not like a regular rap song where there's a 16-bar verse and an eight-bar chorus. The sound is really evolving. BlackenedWhite is just for everyone's ears. Numbers should be the eye-opener."
In addition, he also revealed that a solo album is already in the works.
"It's called Damien, and I believe it'll be me rapping over mainly Tyler, the Creator's beats. I don't rap on Tyler's beats a lot, unless it's for his album. That album will be very ignorant."
Regarding his wishlist of potential collaborators, Hodgy commented following.
"Alchemist, Jay-Z. Madlib. The Black Keys, definitely. They're fucking amazing. Nas -- which is in the works now, thanks to Frank Ocean. Ozzy [laughs]; that'd be fucking dope. I don't know if I'd even be able to make music with him. I'd just be sitting in the room fucking spazzing because I'm in a fucking room with Ozzy Osbourne."
As far as the enigmatic OFWGKTA member Earl Sweatshirt is concerned, privacy seems to be the key.
"If we can't get in contact with Earl, you definitely can't. He will come back when he's ready, if he ever will be ready again. I haven't spoken to Earl in a while. But everyone that's digging for no reason, you're just beating a dead horse. It's dead."

Interview Magazine: Lil Wayne Interview with Paris Hilton and Dimitri Ehrlich
Previous to the Hype Williams conversation, Interview Magazine sat down with Lil Wayne and Paris Hilton for an extensive interview alongside Dimitri Ehrlich. The piece highlights Wayne's rise to prominence and his earliest memories in New Orleans. Along the way, the topics also touch upon his music-making as well as discovering the likes of Drake (additionally, Drake tells his initial experience meeting Lil Wayne as well). An excerpt of the interview can be seen below with the rest of the digital version of the interview seen over at Interview Magazine.
DIMITRI EHRLICH: How are you guys doing? This is Dimitri. You can just let the interview roll if you want, Paris, but I have one question for both of you to start. Paris, you first: When did you first meet Wayne or what was your first thought about him?
PARIS HILTON: I actually met him when he had a Grammy party in L.A. They called me to host it, and I met him there. But I always thought he was such an incredible artist and so talented. He really has this charisma. When he walks into a room, he just has this power that's exciting to be around.
EHRLICH: And what about you, Wayne? What was your first memory of meeting Paris?
LIL WAYNE: That was the first time-at that same party. I remember meeting her, and then I think it was, like, 10 minutes later, I looked up and she was deejaying. She was at the dance, she had the mic. It was really nice. She has fun, and I like that. I like people that enjoy life, 'cause I do the same.
HILTON: So what do you like to be called, Wayne or Lil Wayne?
WAYNE: Actually, Wayne is better.
HILTON: I know that you grew up in New Orleans. Did you always know you were going to be a rapper?
WAYNE: I starting rapping when I was 8 years old, so I think when you're into something at such a young age like that . . . I mean, nobody in the world could have told me I wasn't gonna be a rapper. So, yeah, I always knew I was gonna be one.
EHRLICH: Who did you look up to when you were 8 years old? Who inspired you to want to be a rapper?
WAYNE: The guys I'm with right now, Cash Money Records. They were pretty big locally in New Orleans and so I always just looked up to them. I mean, they were Cash Money Records way before everybody knew their name, and what I mean by that is that the power they have now, they had then, but just locally in the city. So they were always big. I listened to all their music. That's probably why I wanted to be with them.
HILTON: And now you're being called the new king of hip-hop. What do you think of that? Is it something that's hard to live up to? Or is it exciting to have people say that?
WAYNE: It's very exciting. I love pressure, so I guess if that brings forth pressure, then I'm up for it. But, you know, titles are titles, and names are names. As long as people remember me forever, that will be enough for me.
HILTON: Do you ever read your own press, or google yourself?
WAYNE: Um, never. I don't think I've ever googled myself. [laughs] But I do read some things that . . . I mean, if I know that I was with an interviewer and I kind of figure that he or she got something bad or something good from the interview, then I'll read the piece when it comes out. But other than that, I'd have to have a reason to read it-and, usually, I don't have a reason. So, no, I don't really read too much, because I know you know that they word things the way they want to word them when they put it on paper.
HILTON: What's the most bizarre thing that you've ever read about yourself?
WAYNE: The most bizarre thing I've ever read about myself is that I was dead. That was kind of weird to read that I'm dead-mostly because I was reading it. [both laugh]
HILTON: I read that about myself once, too. It's pretty bizarre. So what about paparazzi? Have they ever tried to get aggressive with you? Has there ever been an incident where one of them just set you off?
WAYNE: Because I don't live in L.A., there's not a lot of that. But when I've gone to L.A. and been in the hotel or wherever, I've seen how serious the paparazzi is out there-like, they park across the street from the hotel and as soon as you walk out the front door, they jump out and start snapping. I live in Miami, so I really don't have to deal with that on the same level. The only time I ever really witnessed some crazy paparazzi was during my court experiences. Every time I rode up to court, as soon as I jumped out of the truck, they were there to snap, and all in our way to where we couldn't walk. It's nowhere near like that around here. But maybe I'm just not that caliber of person that they want to take pictures of me like that. [laughs]
EHRLICH: So you're saying that you don't get that hassled by paparazzi in Miami?
WAYNE: Well, obviously sometimes, because I go out. There's this thing out here that publishes pictures of people out and about. So when I go out, I do see pictures of myself. I don't know where those pictures come from-I mean, I don't see the cameras. But I guess I'm just not looking for them.
HILTON: What's your favorite club in Miami?
WAYNE: My favorite club in Miami is a club called LIV. It's in the Fontainebleau Hotel.
HILTON: Oh, I love that club.
GZA, RZA & ODB on Public Access TV circa 1991
Sometimes, amongst the bounty of new music that releases on a daily basis comes a rare glimpse deep into the past of artists who have shaped culture and paved the way for many who would come after. Before yesterday, you would be hard-pressed to find an interview with members of the Wu-Tang Clan that dates back prior to the group's existence. But, thanks to J-Zone over at Ego Trip, that is exactly what we have now. Before GZA, RZA and Ol' Dirty Bastard pioneered what would become Wu Tang, they sat down on a Bronx-based television show called Rhythm & Soul to promote GZA's new album at the time, Words From The Genius. The album title was fitting, as GZA was then known as "The Genius;" ODB went by a different name as well—'Ason Unique'—and RZA was "Prince Rakeem." This 1991 clip showcases an interview with The Genius and Unique—known more for his dancing than his rapping at this point—that features bits of commentary from Mr. Rakeem and an unidentified fourth person wearing a hat. Enjoy this 20-year journey into the past, and be on the lookout for The Genius and Unique's beatboxing and freestyling session at around 5:20.

Earl Sweatshirt Interviewed by The New Yorker
Arguably the music industry's most missing individual has finally spoken up. There have been numerous rumors floating around the web speculating on OFWGKTA's Earl Sweatshirt's whereabouts. The New Yorker has found Odd Future's mysterious member and talked to him about the "Free Earl" campaign and some misconceptions.
“Please listen: I am not being held against my will… Initially I was really pleased that all these people claimed that they wanted me released because I thought that translated into “they care.” So time progresses and the fan base gets bigger and the “Free Earl” chants get louder but now with the “Free Earl” chants come a barely indirect “Fuck Earl’s Mom” and in the blink of an eye my worry changes from “will there still be this hype when I get back” to “Oh shit I just inspired a widespread movement of people who are dedicated to the downfall of my mom…” The only thing I need as of right now is space… Space means no more “Free Earl.” If you sincerely care then I appreciate the gesture, but since you know the hard facts from the source you no longer need to worry. I miss home. I don’t have any definite date though. Even if I did I don’t know if I’d tell you. You’ll hear from me without a doubt when I’m ready.”
